Custom Live Edge Counter Made from a Naples, Florida Live Oak

This custom live edge counter was created from two wood slabs milled from a Florida Live Oak removed in Naples Park, Florida. What makes this project especially meaningful is that we experienced the complete journey of this tree, from its removal and milling to kiln drying, fabrication, and final installation in our client’s home.

The Florida Live Oak has a highly distinctive grain and figure that can look very different from other oak species. The unusual character of these slabs made them an excellent choice for a one of a kind live edge counter.

The two slabs were joined end-to-end using two large, carefully crafted dovetails. A matching bowtie inlay, made from the same Live Oak tree, was added to stabilize a natural bark inclusion while also becoming an attractive design detail.

We enjoy projects like this because every live edge wood slab tells a story. Being able to work with the same tree from the original removal through milling, kiln drying, woodworking, and installation allows us to preserve its natural character while transforming it into functional furniture for the home.

The finished counter showcases the natural edge, unique grain, and character of Florida Live Oak while incorporating traditional woodworking techniques to create a durable and distinctive piece. Our client summed up the finished project perfectly: “So, the longer we look at this the better it gets! Again, nice job.”
